Ovarian Cancer

Cancer is a very efficient and skilled silent killer. There are various types of cancer in fact, and these cancers are nothing but a condition in which the cells multiply in an uncontrollable manner forming masses of cells called tumors.

Ovarian cancer is associated with women and it is a very dangerous situation. Ovaries are the most important reproductive organ in any women. These ovaries produce eggs or ova and are passed through the fallopian tubes to the uterus where these eggs are fertilized by sperms, if any sperms are available at that time. Ovary cancer affects these ovaries. Let us take a look at some of the signs and treatments usually done for ovarian cancer.

Let us always keep in mind that cancer is not like common cold and can't be treated in that way. Some cancers show signs at a very early stage whereas some show signs only at a later stage. Usually there are no specific signs just for ovary cancer. Signs usually show up at a later stage and these signs are also associated with many other medical situations. So it is pretty tough to draw out conclusions when you face certain symptoms. At a beginning stage ovary cancer remains silent and signs start popping out only when the tumor has got big enough to affect other parts of the body as well.

The only earlier symptom known to be associated with ovarian cancer is the irregularity of menstrual cycles. Later symptoms include excessive pain or pressure in the pelvic area. You might feel terrible pain while having intercourse; a slight swelling of lower abdomen is also a symptom at a later stage, feeling of fullness and an urge to urinate frequently, constipation is another situation associated with ovary cancer at a later stage.

Nausea and also vomiting is noted at a later stage, frequent diarrhea and forming gas, abdominal pain due to fluids formed and etc. These signs however show up at a later stage and one might mistake these symptoms for some minor health issues. Always get a check up when you come across any symptoms; a stitch in time always saves nine.

Treatment of ovarian cancer is usually chemotherapy and surgery. In the early stages only the ovary infected with cancer cells and that particular fallopian tubes will be removed. But if the stage worsens, even the uterus will have to be removed along with ovary and fallopian tubes. The preventive techniques are basically stopping ovulation or preventing ovulation, like taking birth control pills, getting pregnant so often, tying the fallopian tubes. However these are not 100 percent guaranteed preventive measure.

Keep a check on your health from time to time. If there are any symptoms that show up frequently then get it clarified. Regular full body checkups can be of great help as you can figure out things that go around in your body. Health is always wealth, so try to always save some budget for your health and always keep you health insurance valid. Maintain a healthy lifestyle and eat healthy.

You should consider taking regular workouts and a proper routine that your body will find peace with. If everything goes well you can stay away from such situations to a great extent. Ovarian cancer is a dangerous situation, and make sure you do everything from your side to prevent it.

Peritoneal Cancer

Primary Peritoneal Cancer is a rare form of cancer (also known as peritoneal adenocarcinoma) that originates in the peritoneum, a thin sheet of fine lines inside the abdomen and covers the uterus and extends over the bladder and rectum. The peritoneum is comprised of epithelial cells. By producing a lubricating fluid, peritoneum, this helps organs move smoothly in the pelvic cavity. Primary peritoneal cancer looks and behaves like ovarian cancer but the ovaries are minimally involved. Women who develop symptoms of ovarian cancer unfortunately will probably end up with primary peritoneal cancer.

Ovarian cancer is a disease in which malignant cells are found in the ovary. There are three types of ovarian tumors: epithelial cells, germ cells and the stromal cells. The cause of ovarian cancer is unknown but there are certain risk factors that indicate an increased likelihood of a woman in developing ovarian cancer metastasis. A risk factor is anything that may increase a person's chance of developing a disease. The following have been suggested as risk factors for ovarian cancer:

Early menstruation - starting periods at an early age usually before age 12
Late menopause (after 52 years of age)
Hormone Replacement Therapy
Infertility (inability to get pregnant)
Having a first child after age 30
Personal history of breast cancer or colon cancer
Family history of ovarian cancer
Some fertility drugs
Exposure to asbestos developing into mesothelioma tumor which affects the abdominal cavity.
The diagnosis of primary peritoneal cancer consists of the following different exams:

Pelvic Exam
Ultrasound
Determination of CA-125 (a blood test to measure the level of CA-125. CA-125 is a protein also known as a Tumor marker that is often found in greater concentrations in the blood of women suffering from ovarian cancer or cancer peritoneal)
Computed Tomography (CT)
Lower GI or barium enema (a series of X-rays of the colon and rectum. The photographs were taken after the patient receives an enema with a white, chalky solution containing barium, the colon and rectum on x-ray, making tumors or other abnormal areas easier to see and detect)
Biopsy

Cervical Cancer

In-spite of having cervical cancer, Sandra Kent still wants to have a baby and fight for her right to get pregnant. She was adamant after having been into surgical treatment right after she has recovered giving birth to her child Ariel.

The level of responsiveness, perseverance as well as motherhood

Sandra Kent's thrashing tale of life started with a twilight phone call about six years have passed. On the line was the secretary of the gynecologist telling her that after truthful and careful tests, the test that was made was invalid. She then who was at her 33rd age carried out the test again. After waiting for quite sometimes, the result was ready and she was asked to go to the clinic."In just a couple of hours I was already there," Mrs. Kent said. "The doctor made certain and told me that the result only requires removal of small lesions and could be done with local anesthesia." Later she was supported by her family and friends to Dr. Hanna Shapiro for a surgery.

And that was when her, Sandra's, worries had begun. Right after the said surgery, her doctor told her that it wasn't possible to take out all the cancer cells thus another surgical operation is needed in order to save her life. " I could hardly utter any word, should I do it, it will mean not to bear a child anymore." Yet the doctor exclaimed, "We're here for your life and not for your ambitions"

Sandra Kent was like being wrecked. On the other hand, her friend doctor, Dr. Shapiro, cheered her up. She told her about the surgery abroad which could still preserve the uterus after the operation. This kind of operation was mastered by Proffessor Daniel Edraz June - a well known expert in Lyon, France.

Sandra: "Statistics shows that there were already two Israelite women who undergone cervical operation abroad. I have called one and she motivated me and passed me to Dr. Ofer Lavie, the head of the gynecology unit of Caramel Medical Center in Haifa." He has not done the cervical operation but he has compiled the information with regards to these instances in Israel and escorted the two patient for operation abroad.

"There I met him, Dr. Lavie and he educated me that it is upon the operation with the findings would be possible to conclude whether or not to remove and or preserve the uterus. He then added that there is a great risk of miscarriage whenever pregnant. However I opted to undergo the operation."

Dr. Lavie's colleague, Prof. Uzi Beller who is also a gynecologist and the director of Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Jerusalem invited Professor Edraz John, an expert from France to do the operation. The successful operation was happened on July 2003 at Caramel Medical Center and gynecologists throughout Israel watched the live broadcast airing out the good news. As Sandra open her eyes, Dr. Lavie told her, "inside the womb." Sandra, "As I heard those words, I grinned and sleep again."

Sandra was then released a week after the successful surgery informed that the lesions were taken out. Yet, she have to do follow up check up and to avoid getting pregnant within the early six months.

Get Well, Wedding, Birth

Time goes by and she met Tom, a medical expert from China. They were exclusively dating and few months later, they were married. They have been trying to let her conceive but she wasn't able to until a couple of months. After the many attempts, she was pregnant but then miscarriage twice. Consulting to Professor Howard Achfaf pointed out that the miscarriage were associated with thyroid function which regulates the metabolism of the body.

Sandra: "I just took Altroxen pill daily and a couple of months later I was pregnant already. I really prayed and prayed that the pregnancy will endure."

On the 29th week, Sandra was bleeding so she was rushed to the hospital to save the pregnancy until giving birth. On the 36th week, she was starting contractions and water breaking. Finally, after six years from surgery, a healthy baby was born via cesarean on the 20th of July from a mother who undergone cervix tumor surgery. The baby is now five months old in the name of Ariel.

Sandra Kent says, "Do all the required tests. We also have to know that doctors don't always know all the solutions to your problems. Consult and check yourself and devote to a doctor who will treat you as human with life and emotion not just for medical records."

Win Against Cancer

I'm a twice cancer survivor and I want to pass on to you advice that will help you. Too often I've seen websites that want your money before they will tell you how to help save your life when you are fighting cancer. To me, that is cruel.

Remember, we are living in a time were cancer doctors stick by the book on "drugs" and then you have the folks at health food stores who point you in a totally different direction. What I advice that you do is listen to everyone. Then use your own common sense.

Overall, when it comes to food eat raw dark vegetables like spinach and dark raw fruits like blue berries. Avoid red meat. Cut way down on sugar. Drink clean drinking water and plenty of it.

Exercise at least 5 times a week for at least 30 minutes. I recommend walking.

Go to church often and put your heart into it. Meet and help out other people and do plenty of praying. I would also recommend reading the Bible and developing a great relationship with Jesus Christ.

I'm a strong believer in vitamin D-3. Buy them in 5000 units. Take one a day. I recently read a book by a colon cancer survivor who said he takes an aspirin daily.

There is talk on websites on B-17 helping fight cancer by eating raw apricot seeds. I recommend you study this more on the internet. On this day, I'm not sure what to believe. But I would recommend for you to look into it.

Keep stress down in your life. Laugh a lot. If you don't have a dog, get one. I recommend a bulldog.

For spices, try finger root, rosemary and turmeric. Tumeric fights cancer, arthritis and Alzheimer's disease.

Then finally, keep believing that you have a wonderful, healthy body from head to toe. Say this out loud with joy in your heart.

Experiencing Symptoms

Colon cancer develops through tumors that arise from the inner wall of the large intestines. A colonoscopy can be used to detect these tumors and benign tumors can be removed through surgery. However, if the tumors become malignant, or cancerous, they can be deadly. Understanding the symptoms of colon cancer can help with early detection and give people a better chance for survival.

Change in bowel movements is one of the most significant signs. Many people experience diarrhea and constipation when dealing with this condition. Those with the disease sometimes have a consistent change in the solidity of their stool. If blood is noticed in the stool, a medical professional should always be contacted immediately as this could be a symptom, along with several other serious medical conditions.

Abdominal pain may also be a sign that this is present. This can come in the form of cramps, gas, or any other type of general pain. Anal bleeding often times occurs in colon cancer sufferers as well. People sometimes describe a feeling of an inability to pass complete bowel movements.

Being constantly weak or tired may mean that this disease is present in the body. Unexplainable weight loss is also a common sign. Some people can lose a significant amount of weight in a short period of time without dieting or exercising. If this is the case, medical attention is always needed, because it could be a sign of many different medical problems.

There are several symptoms of colon cancer which can be recognized in order to seek medical attention. However, many symptoms do not arise until several years after the cancer has developed. Therefore, it is extremely important t

Omega 3 Benefits

Your doctor will tell you that a diet rich in fish oil and other food high in omega-3s is good for your heart - working to cut the risk of hardening of the arteries, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, sudden cardiac death and even heart failure. But now some new research hints that omega 3 benefits might also include cutting your colon cancer risk as well. This form of cancer starts in the large intestine and often brings no symptoms. Omega 3 fatty acids are found in fish like salmon, tuna and halibut, algae and krill, seed oils (walnut oil and flax seed oil) and leafy green veggies.

Work in animals and some small studies in people has found that fish oil supplementation can bring down inflammation, and might also have some cancer-fighting ability. To date, research looking at diets of larger groups of subjects has brought results that aren't so certain.

In search of answers, researchers looked at the relationship between polyunsaturated fatty acid intake and bowel cancer risk in 1,503 white subjects (including 716 colon cancer patients,787 healthy controls) and 369 African American (213 with colon cancer, 156 controls) subjects.

Among whites, those who's omega-3 intake was in the top fourth had half the risk of colon cancer compared to those in the bottom fourth. When the team looked separately at the two main fatty acids in fish oil - eicosapentaenoic acids and docosahexaenoic acids - they saw the colon cancer risk also fell with increasing intake.

Researchers also looked at whites and blacks together where they found a lower risk of colon cancer with increasing intake of omega-3s. A separate analysis of the black participants didn't find this same relationship.

There was an "unexpected" association between the higher omega 3 intake and colon cancer in African American subjects, but the team suggests caution in interpreting this result. It might have been due to chance, though nevertheless they conclude further evaluation would be beneficial.

The team also found that subjects who consumed more omega 6 fatty acids in relation to omega-3s were more likely to have colon cancer.

People in the U.S. typically eat more omega 6 fatty acids (found in palm oil, soybean oil and sunflower oil) than the omega-3 fats. Omega 6 intake in itself didn't affect cancer risk.

Our bodies can't make omega-3 fatty acids on their own, so 500 milligrams a day of the components EPA (eiosapentaenoic acid) plus DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is what's recommended for healthy adults. Getting good fats from food is the best way to go, as 90% of the nutrient (vs. 50% of the supplement form) are absorbed into the body.

If you do decide to use fish oil or other supplements to get the omega-3 you need, remember that even in the U.S., these products aren't as regulated as they should be. Stay away from "too good to be true" claims, or products backed by research that isn't printed in a respected, peer reviewed journal.

Reputable manufactures will point out the quality manufacturing processes they use, which all add to the omega 3 benefits. Know too that fish oil capsules can contain the same contaminants as fresh fish, and have been known to leave you with an unpleasant body odor. Never, under any circumstances, take more than the amount recommended on the bottle, and be sure to talk with your doctor before you begin any supplementing program to minimizes colon cancer risk.

Mammography Viewers

Contemporary medical clinics and hospitals are making the shift to digital medical imaging, and once the change is in effect, many wonder how they ever got along with film imaging. Such is the case with medical facilities that offer mammographies. A mammography viewer used with a pacs ris unit is the standard operating procedure in medical facilities, and for good reason. Office performance and workflow are enhanced through the use of the mammography workstation to view, send, receive and archive patient digital medical images.

Pacs ris plays an important role in mammo viewer capabilities. A pacs system allows a medical facility to stay in compliance with HIPPA regulations, because it requires the use of administered usernames and passwords for security. A pacs component also allows medical offices to send and receive medical digital images such as mammographies over the World Wide Web. It also enables users to file and retrieve digital images and associated digital reports in the Dicom format. Instead of taking minutes to walk to a file room to fetch files, personnel can now take seconds to perform the same task electronically. In this way, medical facilities benefit from the sheer time savings spent on routine but necessary tasks, and another reason why these viewers are so popular.

The ris component of the pacs ris system enables patient processing and reporting to happen efficiently. Ris lets you quickly process patient intake information, and it helps with scheduling patient visits to physicians and all of the reporting that goes with great patient care. Much of this work can be customized and automated to meet your medical office's specific needs, another reason why many use the electronic viewing systems.

Mammography radiology medical imaging can be enhanced when a mammography workstation is used. The viewer allows you to manipulate the digital medical images through the use of zoom, pan, rotation and mirror tools. Cine tools and probe tools, as well as measurement tools, make the process of diagnosis and evaluation more efficient. BIRADS reporting, the reporting system used by mammography imaging centers, along with digital annotations made to digital images, is also possible on the workstation.

Systems such as this can also be used to archive and save patient medical records, which is enthusiastically used by hospitals and medical clinics to meet HIPPA requirements. Archiving can occur through saving digital information to CD and DVD, but it can also happen at a remote server, so that patient records are kept off-site as a backup for safety in the event of a disaster.

In clinics and hospitals, the mammography workstation is where physicians go to save time and make their work more efficient, leading to its popularity.

Breast Cancer

Jannette Kortman will be the first one to tell you that she is not a doctor.

She is not a medical professional. She is not a nutritionist. She is, however, a compassionate, caring person who wants you to live a healthy, joyful life. She is also a breast cancer survivor. In her book, The ABC's of Breast Cancer, from Victim to Survivor (AuthorHouse), she offers her research, her wisdom and her hope for others who are dealing with breast cancer, or any other type of illness. She also gives good advice to anyone who wants to live a happy and healthy life.

"Your mind is a very powerful tool," she said. "I encourage you to use your mind to your advantage. The words you speak will determine whether you are a victim or a survivor. A survivor detaches from the problem, and has a moment of clarity. 'I am going to survive.' How you choose your words will determine your destiny."

The recurring theme throughout the book is one of taking responsibility for your choices, your health and yourself. What you eat, the medications you take and your attitude toward yourself and others all take a toll on your general health. Attitude, nutrition, knowledge and the love and support of your family and friends are key to cancer survival.

Attitude is very important to all aspects of life, but especially when you are ill. Kortman never said "I have cancer" she always said, "I am a cancer survivor." If you say you are sick, you will be sick.

"The toxic effect of negativity brings only destruction to your life," she said. "I believe you need to make your words and thoughts positive and life giving."

Another form of negativity to avoid is anger. Carrying around such negativity in your heart and mind is not conducive to healing.

"The only person you are hurting when you cannot forgive, is yourself," she said. "You are not hurting the person who you are angry at. Staying mad at someone else is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die."

After doing much research, she was shocked at the lack of proper nutrition she had given her body for most of her life. She had saturated her body with "dead foods" such as colas, fast food and processed foods. She changed her ways to much healthier, life-giving foods.

"Nutrition pays a huge part in your recovery from cancer," she said, "Cancer cannot live in a healthy environment. When you quit feeding the cancer, the cancer will die."

Undergoing chemotherapy was a very painful process. Being pumped full of toxins to kill the cancer made her violently ill. Her doctors prescribed medications to deal with the side effects. She did her research and was shocked at the overuse of "heavy drugs."

"With each drug that is prescribed, there are ten or more side effects," she said. "When a side effect appears, another drug is given to counteract the side effect from the first drug, and so it goes on and on and on."

She weighed every decision carefully, whether it was which doctor to use, undergoing chemotherapy, taking a certain medication, what kinds of foods to eat or having breast reconstruction. Research and clear, careful thought are key.

"Knowledge is Power, and laughter is healing to your body and soul," she said. "Arm yourself with knowledge, and laugh as though nobody else is looking. You create your own Karma with the power of your own beliefs. You owe it to yourself to change any negative thought patterns that are causing you pain and suffering."

Whether you are a cancer survivor, beating your cancer, or never destined to have cancer, that is good advice for anyone.

Ovarian Cysts Treatment

Ovarian cysts could be unbelievably abominable and regrettably many women endure in silence. If you have just ascertained that you have an ovarian cyst then there are diverse ovarian cysts treatment alternatives useable that you could try. Inside this article you would find out more about some of the finest ovarian cyst treatments.

The Different Ovarian Cyst Treatment alternatives usable

The most striking ovarian cysts treatment alternative usable for ovarian cysts is operation. A Cystectomy would dispatch the cyst yet it would still ascertain that the ovaries remain in good shape. Generally a Cystectomy runs to patients who are bearing with vesica cancer; but they could also be used on non-cancerous vesicles too. If your vesicle is cancerous then a Cystectomy would not incline. Alternatively part of the ovaries would be removed.

When ovarian cysts are cancerous, an ovariectomy would usually be executed for this kind of ovarian cysts treatment. This includes dispatching one or both ovaries. If you have to go through this operation then you would no more be able to produce or modulate oestrogen levels within the body. This entails that you would usually be given hormone-replacement therapy (HRT). An ovariectomy is a very serious ovarian cysts treatment and surgeons would only conceive it as a last alternative for cancerous ovarian cysts.

As well as operation, there are also other ovariant cysts treatment that you could try. A few of these could annihilate ovarian cysts, and they might assist to allay your aching and forbid further cysts from arising. Of course this only enforces to non cancerous cysts. All cancerous ovarian cysts would need to be surgically dispatched.

The anovulatory drug

One improbable ovarian cysts treatment option for ovarian cysts is the anovulatory drug.

Many physicians prescribe the pill not to annihilate the current cyst, but to forbid future ones from arising. They also have the power to forbid a current cyst from flourishing any larger. This is because you could use the pill to skip a couple of periods if you want to.

Research has displayed that women could go without a menstruation safely for three months. If you skip a menstruation when you have an ovarian cyst, it can't establish at all while you aren't menstruating.

Therefore if you have a family unit chronicle of ovarian cysts, or if you often get them, the anovulatory drug may be a good ovarian cysts treatment alternative for you.

Alternate Non Cancerous Ovarian Cysts Treatment

If you would like to try out alternate ovarian cysts treatment then commonly making particular changes to your dieting and adding a couple of antioxidant supplements might help.

Many women swear by alternate treatments, whereas other people state that they have had no consequence on their health over a set period of time. What works for one-woman may not work for some other. You need to hold this in mind when it concerns alternative ovarian cysts treatments.

One thing to hold in mind with alternate ovarian cysts treatment is that you should confer your doctor first. This is true prior to you make any alterations to your dieting and lifestyle.

These are just a couple of alternatives available to you once you have an ovarian cyst. All of the time consult your physician before you choose upon any treatment project. They would be able to go through the alternatives usable and help you to select what is better for you.

There is plenty of mix-up and heresay about how to heal Ovarian Cysts, whether it be formal medical treatment or alternate medicine.

Decreasing Rate of Cancer Deaths

The battle of mankind against cancer has been an ongoing one. Even with several cutting edge technological breakthroughs we have not yet been able to completely cure this deadly disease. However, there is hope yet, because recent research findings show a positive trend of declining death rates due to cancer. The death rate is seen to drop steadily; the rate of decrease has almost doubled in 2002-2004 from the figure in 1993-2002.

The overall death rate still remains higher for men than women. But the death rate decreased for the top 15 cancers in both men and women. Most a href=” http://www.empowereddoctor.com/cancer-treatment “ target=”_blank” cancer /a related deaths in men are due to prostrate, lung and colorectal cancers. Breast, lung and colorectal cancer related deaths in women have also seen a dip.

The reason for this decline in death rate could be because of progress that has been achieved in anti-smoking drives, regular screening and commencement of treatment as soon as the disease is detected. Surprising news is that even cancer detection rates have reduced which means that we are slowly but surely overtaking this killer disease.
The reason for the drop in breast cancer rate in 2001-2004 is believed to be increased mammography screening and decrease in the usage of hormone replacement therapy. Lung cancer also shows similar decreasing trend in both men and women.

Experts say that the fight against cancer could show even better results if everyone in the US had access to essential healthcare facilities. Most important are the screening, prevention services and the primary healthcare.
What seems to be working is the greater awareness among people about the disease itself, prevention, early detection and prompt treatment. The awareness on healthy lifestyle and diet also contributes significantly to this positive trend. If we can just keep up this healthy trend, the day that we overcome cancer is not too far.

Cancers: Porphyrins and Photodynamic Therapy

Liberman describes a number of experiments done with full spectrum light and /or specifically selected colors. Studies done on mice that were bred to develop tumors, indicated that a pink light environment resulted in the earliest development of tumors while full spectrum light inhibited the development of tumors for a twenty percent longer period of time. Older cells are more at risk for accumulated DNA damage that precedes cancer. Experiments done on fish and paramecia using near-ultraviolet radiation indicated that the damaged cells not only repaired themselves but also reversed their aging. What if it is discovered that human cells have the same capabilities?

Since 1900 when scientists first noted that certain substances were damaging to living tissue when exposed to light, but were not toxic in the dark, it has been discovered that many of these substances belong to a family of light-activated chemicals called porphyrins produced by almost all living organisms and necessary for cell respiration.

During World War II (1942) it was noted that if porphyrins were present in one’s body, tumors would floresce under light, brilliant red under ultraviolet light. This discovery was built upon in 1973 when technology made photodynamic therapy
possible. Scientists found that certain photosensitive chemicals selectively identify cancer cells under ultraviolet light and accumulate in these cells. Then, under red light, these chemicals destroy the cancer cells. 1

As of the 1991 publication date of Light-Medicine of the Future, only Photofrin (DHE) had been FDA approved for human use. After injection with a prescribed amount of Photofrin, the patient has to wait for up to seventy-two hours in an environment free of direct sunlight or other bright lights so that some of the Photofrin which also collects in certain normal tissues (kidneys, liver, spleen, and pancreas) can be eliminated. The treatment is delivered to the site of the tumor by hair thin fiber optic tubes. The result is that within hours the cancer cells begin to die leaving most normal tissues unharmed. “Even in tissues that are just partially cancerous, only the cancerous portions of the tissue will die. Since the specific photosensitive dyes are combined with highly tuned Laser light, the treatment is extremely precise.” (113)
On February 26, 2008 I did an on line search on Photofrin (DHE) through Encarta Encyclopedia to ascertain any further clinical trials/developments utilizing Photofrin. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Drug Dictionary, Photofrin is still the U.S. brand name and (DHE) the abbreviation. Synonyms are: dihematoporphyrin ether, Photofrin II, and Porfimer. The name Photofrin II indicates some new version of the original Photofrin.

The National Cancer Institute, as of February 26, 2008, lists two closed published clinical trials (1/1/2000, and 10/2/2003), three active published trials (3/22/2007, 9/12/2007, and 1/24/2008), one active non-published trial and two approved but not yet active trials. All deal with Photodynamic Therapy using one or another of the brand names (synonyms) for photofrin. The studies deal with an array of cancers: Bilary Tract Tumors, Cholongiocarcinomas, Bladder, Upper Digestive Tract, Esophageal, Lung and Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Larynx.

It certainly appears that Light based therapies and medications are the Medicine of the Present and Future

A New Light on Cancer

There are a number of light centered applications that reinforce the mind-body-spirit connection in the medicine of light.

In his book Light – Medicine of the Future, Liberman writes that we must expand our vision regarding the purpose of light. It is much more than illumination for our environment. It is “potentially one of the most disease-prevention tools at our disposal.” 1

In a “leading edge” paper written by engineer and inventor David Tumey and his associate, William Sheline, entitled “Royal Rife Revisited: Reconstruction of the Original Rife Ray Tube,” the authors describe a fascinating piece of equipment and its related therapeutical uses.

Royal Raymond Rife (l888-1971) was an accomplished scientist and microbiologist who developed an optical microscope that could provide magnifications, and resolutions heretofore unheard of…The major difference between visible light and electron microscopy is that by its nature, electron microscopes destroy the microorganisms while viewing them. Rife’s major advantage was that he could image living virus and other microorganisms and observe them in their natural state…
It is argued that Rife was the first person to empirically prove that viruses and bacteria are pleomorphic forms. Pleomorphism is the phenomenon by which one distinct life form mutates into another. Rife basically classified pathogenic disease causing bacteria into ten individual groups. Rife demonstrated that any organism within its group could be transformed morphologically into any other organism within the ten groups by carefully altering the media (light) in which it was cultured. Of course this discovery contradicts modern microbiology which teaches that a bacteria’s morphology is fixed and Unchangeable. 2 (Italicizing is mine)

Rife also discovered techniques for successfully culturing cancer virus. The virus he identified as BX and it was noted that the viruses refracted a purplish red color with a monochromatic beam under his microscope. In fact, Rife discovered that each organism depending on its state would refract unique spectra and have distinct coloration. By the late 1920’s and early 1930’s Rife discovered that by irradiating these pathogenic microorganisms with specific frequencies known as MOR’s for Mortal Oscillatory Rates, he could cause them to devitalize either by interrupting normal cytologic function or by inducing them to mutate into a non-pathogenic form. (2)

The authors go on to relate how Rife developed his original list of MOR’s by manipulating the dial of an audio frequency that had the ability to devitalize a particular organism. By the mid 1950’s he had developed a list of fifteen frequencies and the fifteen viruses they devitalized. The viruses on the list included Tetanus, Treponema, Gonorrhea, Staphylococci, Pneumococci, Streptothrix, Streptococci, Typhoid bacteria, Typhoid virus, Bacillus Coli Rod Form, Bacillus Coli Virus, Tuberculosis Rod Form, Tuberculosis Virus, Sarcoma (all forms?), and Carcinoma (all forms?) 3(The question marks are Stafford’s).
Tumey and Sheline describe how they went about reconstructing the Rife Ray Tube. In the conclusion of their paper they indicate that the next logical step might be to repeat the laboratory studies of Dr. Stafford and others whose work utilizing Rife’s MOR list in treating the associated viruses resulted in some amazing results as reported in Stafford’s paper, “Electromagnetic Field Therapy” (1963).

In the conclusion of his paper Dr Stafford writes:

Having worked with the specifically related field modality for the past six years, I am convinced that there exists some effective force in this form of therapy. This modality seems to exert some modifying force on the animal and human body…

If Mr. Rife’s theory is right, then a method must be developed to isolate the offending organism in each specific case and find the exact frequency which causes that organism to disintegrate. These facts should be determined before treating each patient in every instance. With data of this sort available for each specific case before treatment, more consistent results should be obtained. To date, we are merely using data developed by Mr. Rife years ago. We only can hope that we are approaching the critical resonant frequency of the suspected pathogen. This is a very blind and unscientific approach, admittedly. Perhaps with adequate research, these weaknesses may be overcome. (10-11)

The Contributions of Radiation Oncology to the Medical World

Oncology is a branch of medicine that studies cancerous tumors and develops methods and techniques for treatment. Those who practice oncology are known as oncologists. br

There are two main branches of oncology: br
1. Medical oncology
2. Radiation oncology
br

Medical oncology has contributed chemotherapy, while a href= http://www.vantageoncology.com/ radiation oncology /a has and continues to contribute many new technologies, mainly in the form of new radiation-delivery methods. br
Although it may seem that radiation oncology is limited in its ability to expand, grow, and develop increasingly improving treatments, the rapid advancements in computer and other technologies outside the medical field are assisting in the advancement of radiation oncology, making it a continuously changing field. br

Despite tough training and education requirements, it is the exciting changes in oncology that attract many doctors to this field. As amazing as it may seem, the advances in oncology from just the last two decades has resulted in far lower mortality rates and survival rates astronomically higher than they were just 20 years ago. br

Advances in cancer detection and public education about cancer have also contributed to increased survival rates. For most kinds of cancer, oncologists are now able to successfully treat the patients thanks to early detection, allowing treatment to begin before the cancer has a chance to grow out of control. br

One of the more recent advances in a href= http://www.vantageoncology.com/ radiation oncology /a is TomoTherapy, a commercialized type of IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy) that provides new and more effective radiation-delivery. TomoTherapy is a perfect example of the work being done in radiation oncology. br
TomoTherapy does not actually provide any new technologies, but rather integrates several older technologies into one detection and delivery system. It also improves on the delivery of radiation to a tumor site by rotating around the patient, allowing it to deliver a higher dose of overall radiation from several angles rather than many fixed beams of weaker radiation. br

Delivering high amounts of radiation is one of the best ways to treat cancer. However, since tumors are inside the body and surrounded by healthy tissue that you don’t want to damage, delivering such high amounts of radiation to effectively treat a tumor is enough to kill the patient. But thanks to modern delivery methods, radiation oncologists have been able to more precisely target the cancer while sparing healthy tissue, thereby allowing for higher doses of radiation, without extra harm or danger to the patient, which equates to faster recovery times and higher survival rates. br

Every advancement in radiation oncology, and oncology in general, leads to a day when cancer of all types will be as easily treatable as a broken arm.

Radiosurgery: Brain Surgery without the Surgery

When tumors show up in the brain, and open surgery is not an option, a href= http://www.vantageoncology.com/ radiosurgery /a is often the therapy turned to. br

Tumors that appear in the brain do so without any known cause. Therefore, the best that can be done is to deal with them when they appear because there is no known method of preventing or reducing the occurrence of brain tumors. br
When a brain tumor is found, it may be discovered that surgery is not an option. This can happen if the tumor is in a non-operable area of the brain (surgery would cause too much damage to surrounding tissue), or the overall condition of a patient is such that open surgery is too much of a danger. Radiosurgery allows treatment of brain tumors without surgery. In many cases, even where surgery is an option, radiosurgery might be used in conjunction with surgery, or in replacement of it. br

Advantages of radiosurgery over conventional surgery include reduced mortality and avoidance of pain and post-surgical complications, such as hemorrhaging or infection. br

a href= http://www.vantageoncology.com/ Radiosurgery /a delivers a targeted dose of radiation to the brain tumor site. Depending on the location of the tumor, sensitivity of surrounding tissue, and size of the tumor, the treatment will involve either stereostatic radiosurgeryor stereostatic fractionated radiosurgery. br

Stereostatic radiosurgery attempts to minimize collateral damage by directing several weaker beams of radiation that converge on the tumor at the same time. This delivers a high dose of radiation to the tumor, but minimizes exposure to surrounding tissue. br

In highly sensitive cases, or where the tumor is larger, stereostatic fractionated radiosurgery delivers lower levels of radiation at a time across a period of several weeks. This minimizes damage to surrounding tissue, and also allows for damaged healthy tissue to repair itself between treatments. br

Because this form of radiation treatment is directed at the head, hair loss is a very common side effect to radiosurgery along with an irritated scalp. Hair usually grows back without any problems a few months after treatment.

Choosing a Radiation Oncologist

For many of us, choosing a doctor is not really something that happens. We go to the hospital, a doctor sees us, sends us to another doctor who sends us to another doctor. We never question who were being sent to or if there are any other options. They’re the doctors, and they know best… right? br

But when it comes to something as important as cancer treatment, you are essentially putting your life into the hands of the doctor you choose for treatment. When being treated for cancer, experience counts for something. If you’re going to be receiving radiation therapy then your a href= http://www.vantageoncology.com/ radiation oncologist /a is going to play a big part in your overall treatment. br
With all the recent advancements in radiation therapy, a radiation oncologist should be trained on and have access to the latest treatment options, but you also want him or her to have the hands on experience of having treated others with the latest technology. br

Checking with other cancer patients to ask them about their a href= http://www.vantageoncology.com/ radiation oncologist /a is one way to find a good doctor. However, keep in mind that positive referrals are often the result of how a patient gets along with a particular doctor, and since the general public simply isn’t educated in medicine, knowing how a particular doctor compares to another is impossible to ascertain unless a person actually makes an effort to make those comparisons, digging into a doctor’s history and training. br

Fortunately, organizations like Vantage Oncology can lighten the burden of finding a highly qualified radiation oncologist. br

Founded in direct response to the growing needs of cancer patients, Vantage Oncology is made up of a network of some of the nation’s best and most qualified radiation oncologists, trained in and with access to the latest radiotherapy treatment options. br

Radiation oncologists that are part of the Vantage Oncology network strive to deliver the best healthcare services and support for both those diagnosed with cancer as well as their families. br

What to Expect When Entering Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy, often referred to as a href= http://www.vantageoncology.com/ radiotherapy /a , has many uses. While it is useful for the treatment of non-malignant conditions such as thyroid eye disease, it is most commonly used as the result of a cancer diagnosis and as part of a treatment regiment to control malignant tumors. br

When used to treat cancer, radiation therapy is often administered in conjunction with surgery and chemotherapy. In operable cases, surgery may be conducted to remove as much of the cancer as possible, then treatment is followed up by radiation therapy to kill any remaining cancer cells. The same is true of treatment in conjunction with chemotherapy. In some cases, a combination of all three treatments will be used. br

To treat a person with radiation therapy, a doctor known as a radiation oncologist directs high energy x-rays at the patient’s body in order to kill cancer cells and prevent their growth and proliferation. These x-rays are the same as those administered to image bones and teeth, and just like an x-ray of your arm or teeth, it is not painful. However, the concentration of x-rays is much higher as its purpose is to kill living cells rather than just obtain an image. br

At such high doses, the x-rays are capable of killing not just the cancerous cells, but health tissue as well. a href= http://www.vantageoncology.com/ Radiation therapy /a works, however, because healthy cells that are damaged are better able to recover whereas cancerous cells have a more difficult time. To minimize
damage to healthy cells, the radiation is targeted to the part of the body where the cancer resides. br

Common side effects include fatigue, nausea, decreased immune response, hair loss, and others. Side effects often result from the radiation of healthy tissue. However, new technologies are increasing the precision of radiation therapy, thereby reducing side effects and improving success rates.

Flax - a role in the treatment of cancer?

b Flax - a role in the treatment of cancer? /b

p Lignan, a fiber found in flax, is the latest hope in the b a href= http://www.mitamins.com/disease/Cancer.html treatment of cancer /a /b /p

p Flax - the plant that gave grateful world the classic look of linen - hot research property nowadays. Prized for millennia as a source of seeds and cooking oil as well as cloth, the flax plant has also been long celebrated for its medicinal properties, especially in easing coughs. But the therapeutic potential of flax really took off in the late 20th century, when scientists found that flax seed is rich in alpha linolenic acid, an inflammation-alleviating omega-3 fatty acid. /p

p The latest substance in the scientific spotlight: flax lignans. While many plant foods supply this unique type of fiber, flax seed is the richest possible source. Question is, what makes lignans so special? /p

b Hormonal Shifts /b

p Sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone affect a lot more than just libido and reproduction; if these powerful substances go out of balance, they can actually stimulate the overgrowth of breast or prostate tissue (which may lead to b a href= http://www.mitamins.com/disease/Breast-Cancer.html breast cancer /a /b or prostate cancer). Lignans act as phytoestrogens. When they are ingested, the body transforms them into a form that keeps hormones from over-stimulating cells, a process that helps support healthy cell growth. Lignans also interfere with enzymes that can promote cancer development and therefore may be helpful in the treatment of cancer. /p

p Populations that eat lignan-rich diets have lower breast cancer rates, and early research suggests that increased lignan intake may help protect breast tissue through cancer prevention. In one study, women newly diagnosed with breast cancer who ate muffins made with 2 1/2 tablespoons of flaxseed every day experienced reduced tumor growth (Breast Cancer Research & Treatment 11/00) suggesting a role for flax in the treatment of cancer. This may explain why some women find relief from mild menopausal miseries after taking flax lignans. /p

p Lignans are antioxidants, substances that can keep harmful free radicals from ping-ponging through tissues; scientists think that¡¯s why flax lignans have shown an ability to lower cholesterol and act in cancer prevention. Flax also appears to have an ability to reduce stress; among post-menopausal women who ate three different flax diets, the ones who consumed more lignans experienced the biggest drop in both b a href= http://www.mitamins.com/disease/Stress.html stress /a /b hormone levels and blood pressure (Journal of the American College of Nutrition 12/03). /p

b FLAX FACTS /b

p What is it?: A plant, I.inum usitatissimum, used for food, clothing and remedies
What it does: Flax seeds are high in an anti-inflammatory omega-3 fat called alpha linolenic acid; recent research has focused on flax lignan, a fiber that shows promise in the both the prevention and treatment of cancer, keep arteries clear and reduce prostate enlargement /p

b Keeping Men Comfortable /b

p While women certainly benefit from lignans, flax can be beneficial for men too. Prostate cells, like breast cells, can be kicked into overdrive by hormones which may result in prostate cancer. A pilot study at Duke University suggested that flax lignans, combined with a low-fat diet, may reduce cancer risk - yet another indication that flax may be useful in the treatment of cancer. The researchers gave finely ground flaxseed to 25 men with prostate cancer who were awaiting surgery; after a month, all had reduced hormone levels and their cholesterol levels were lowered as well. Tumor growth also slowed (L/ro/ogy7/01) /p

p What¡¯s more, flax¡¯s testosterone-moderating effects appear to help reduce benign prostate hyperplasia an uncomfortable predicament that vexes many men as they age. Rats fed a lignan supplement had comfortably smaller prostates then other rodents, and men scheduled for repeat prostate biopsy who took supplemental flax experienced reduced rates of benign prostatic growth (Urology 05/04). Flax may even help reduce hairloss in men. DHT, the form of testosterone that can harm the prostate, attacks hair follicles and spurs excess oil production in the skin, increasing the chances of pimple formation. Flax lignans interfere with DHT production. /p

p From the tiny flax seed mighty health benefits grow. Some forms of fiber really are special

Asbestos the Silent Killer

An article about the history of asbestos and the potential future problems asbestos may cause. People fear that asbestos could cause an epidemic if it is not removed from places of business and homes quickly and appropriately.

Despite the fact the government banned the importation of blue and brown asbestos over twenty years ago and finally banned white asbestos in 1999, 3500 people currently die every year from asbestos related diseases.

Be it the lung choking “asbestosis” or the cancer “Mesothelioma” these diseases make asbestos the biggest industrial killer today.

In the 50’s and 60’s following World War 2, millions of tons of raw asbestos was imported into the UK to be made into building products and other industrial uses.

It was cheap, easy to mine and when added to various building products gave them extra strength and fire retardant properties.

Just what was needed to help the post war building boom.

However it was not until well into the sixties that it was discovered that the ingestion of its fibres caused terminal damage to peoples lungs.

All those people working in the factories using asbestos in their products had already been damaged by the microscopic fibres of asbestos. This was borne out by the climbing death rates in the late 80’s as it can take anything from 5 to 25 years for the asbestos dieses to kill you.

When the government brought in various bans on the importation and the using of asbestos in products they assumed by the turn of the new millennium there would be a fall in the number of deaths attributed to asbestos.

Unfortunately the exact opposite happened and the death toll continued to rise.

After some research the government found that because very few landlords or tenants of non-domestic buildings had bothered to have their building surveyed to find the whereabouts of any asbestos containing materials thousands of maintenance workers were coming into buildings and drilling holes or cutting out panels etc and disturbing the asbestos and on a regular basis breathing in small amounts of deadly fibres.

So as time went on they became infected and joined the numbers of people dying who had worked in the asbestos factories of the 50’s and 60’s.

Out of all this chaos was born the “Control of Asbestos in the Workplace” legislation.

From May 2004 for the first time every owner or tenant, whoever was deemed responsible under the terms of leases, was legally obliged to have their premises surveyed and the position, quantity, condition and type of all ACM’s noted in a report form with a management plan to deal with the risk.

These reports would then be available to any employee or outside contractor who may want to work in the areas containing asbestos and following laid out “Codes of Practice” take the necessary steps to minimise the release of harmful fibres into the atmosphere and subsequently into their lungs.

Simple precautions like not using power tools, wearing an appropriate face-mask, wearing throw away overalls and other very basic things will help stop the ingestion of deadly asbestos fibres.

Although this act will not immediately stop the death rate soaring to 10,000 deaths per year by 2020 eventually with the new knowledge and awareness of asbestos products contained in these reports we will see a decline in the death rate.

The message about asbestos is not to rip it out of buildings unnecessarily but to know of its whereabouts and manage it.

Only finally removing it under controlled conditions when it is damaged or disintegrating beyond reasonable repair.

Prostate Cancer Research

Pomegranates have long been used in traditional folk remedies to treat sore throats, inflammation, and rheumatism. And recent scientific research has suggested they are also potentially effective in both preventing and treating prostate cancer.

One study, conducted on human prostate cancer cells in lab dishes, at the University of Wisconsin, found that there were dose dependant improvements. Another study at the same facility injected mice with human prostate cancer cells. These mice developed malignancies. Some mice were fed plain water, whilst two other groups of mice were given water mixed with different concentrations of pomegranate extract.

Those mice that had water only had tumors that grew much faster than the pomegranate and water groups. The quantities given to the mice were comparable to that which people might get if they drank pomegranate juice on a daily basis. And whilst pomegranate juice hasnt been tested on humans with prostate cancer yet, the results are very good.

The study did not indicate what aspects of pomegranate juice were responsible for slowing down prostate tumour growth. But the scientists involved did mention the antioxidant polyphenolic compounds, which are more effective than green tea and red wine.

Pomegranate extract not only inhibited the growth of cancer cells, it also worked by another means - apoptosis.

Apoptosis refers to a way that cells can die. Cancer growths are characterized by an uncontrolled growth of cells that do not follow the normal processes of cellular differentiation of regular, healthy cells. Cellular differentiation means that the characteristics of a cell change and get the functions that a mature, healthy cell would. For example, liver cells have specialized liver functions, as do prostate, breast, kidney, and all other types of cells. This is normal and healthy.

In tumour growths, although some cells fully differentiate, many only differentiate partially, and some not at all. And the tumors which have more undifferentiated cells grow faster. So, inducing cellular differentiation is one approach to cancer treatment. The other two ways that doctors and researchers try to treat cancer is by causing the death of cancerous cells. They do this through apoptosis, mentioned above, and necrosis.

In apoptosis, cell death is programmed into the cell when it is born. So the cell dies in a more natural way that is less destructive on its environment. By this I mean it doesnt cause inflammation and the damage associated with it to neighboring cells that may be healthy. Cells die either when they reach cellular old age or when their death benefits the body as a whole. Necrosis, on the other hand, does cause inflammation.

Generally, prostate cancer grows very slowly, although it is unpredictable and can grow quickly and spread.
